| CESPA |
CESPA started its activity in 1970 as a firm dedicated to urban and public administration cleaning services to become a group leader in the service area of waste management.
CESPA Group has two big areas. One of these areas is Urban services which include the urban cleaning, urban waste collection and gardening. The other area is Industrial services, which include activities as urban waste treatment, industrial waste collection, inert and industrial landfills, sanitary waste treatment, plant of physical-chemical waste treatment, sorting and transfer plants and engineering and consulting.
CESPA, in the waste sphere, manages 29 landfills (25 in Spain and 4 in Portugal) where 5.700.062 t of waste have been collected during 2001. The totality of treat leachates during the same year has been 264.208 m3, therefore CESPA has a wide experience in the waste management area.
From the R+D department, CESPA has carried since 1999 projects of leachate treatment whose results have been applied in the landfill management. The direction of these projects is from the technical department that includes 16 technicians.

| LEQUIA-UdG |
LEQUIA-UdG, which belongs to the Universitat de Girona, has a wide experience in the field of wastewater treatment plant control and supervision, mainly in the application of activated sludge process for nutrient nitrogen removal to improve management of real plants and with the use of mathematical models to improve wastewater treatment plant by process simulation.
In this sense, we have obtained financial support from the Spanish Government (Bio94-0679-C02 to develop a knowledge based system for the supervision and retrofit of biotechnological processes, CICYT Amb 97-889 to apply knowledge based systems in the management of biologic wastewater treatment plants including nutrient removal, CICYT Bio99-1014-C02-02 to study the evolution of nitrifying microorganisms when modifying environmental parameters), from the Catalan Government ("Impact assessment of small villages (< 2000 inhabitants) discharge into the rivers of Alt Empordà", and "Evaluation of nutrient removal process in big (>10000 inhabitants) wastewater treatment plants), and from private enterprises (e.g. "Improvement of wastewater treatment plant performance by simulation" with Fundació Aigües de Barcelona, "Improving carbon and nitrogen removal from urban and industrial wastewater with a Sequencing Batch Reactor" with CIDA HIDROQUÍMICA SA, and "Removal of high ammonia concentrations from municipal landfill leachates by combination of aerobic and anaerobic biological processes" with Agbar Foundation, Agbar).
The groups are also participating under two European projects: RIMSAT and STREAMES focused under the application of artificial intelligent techniques to improve the emergency teams response over remote incidents (RIMSAT) or to assess stream water quality management (STREAMES).

| Agbar Foundation |
The Agbar Foundation is a foundation based in Barcelona whose activities are:
|
| > |
The coordination and promotion of environmental research projects, grants for undertaking projects, and the technology transfer agreements and accords in the area of Technology management (R&D&I). |
| > |
The creation of a documentary found in related fields, organization of congresses, seminars and publications, and agreements with universities on training and research programs, in the spreading knowledge area. |
| > |
The sponsorship of social and cultural events and the Museum of Water, in the social sphere. |
The Agbar Foundation manages technology through a steering plan that includes research, development, demonstration and innovation projects and which is drawn up on a yearly basis. This steering plan is revised by the Innovation Committee of the Agbar Group.
The Agbar Foundation develop tasks such as:
|
| > |
To draw up the annual R&D&I Steering Plan based on records entered by companies with access to the Group's intranet. |
| > |
To compile data on research and the development projects of the entire Agbar Group. |
| > |
To develop collaboration with universities through framework agreements and scientific collaboration accord. |
| > |
To establish contacts on managing research projects with companies in the Group. |
| > |
To provide grants to carry out research projects related to the environment and ensure their follow-up. |
| > |
To monitor projects through regular reports drawn up by the companies. |
| > |
To enter contents into the information database found in the ATIB (Agbar Technologies Information Database). |
